McLaren refrain from predicting winner for Spanish Grand Prix

McLaren say that the Spanish Grand Prix outcome cannot be predicted at this point.

So far, there have been four different winners of four different teams after four races completed in the season. The situation has led for the title wins to be open and no clear favourites in sight.

McLaren have thus refrained from making any predictions for the race and have said that a millimetre more or less could draw the line between success and failure emphasising on how little the difference is between the leading teams.

McLaren looked like the team that could dominate the season but Fernando Alonso won the second race of the season the Malaysian GP with Sergio Perez of Sauber coming in second place. Mercedes driver Nico Rosberg claimed his maiden victory at the Chinese Grand Prix and finally Sebastian Vettel came back to his winning ways by taking the Bahrain GP victory.

Lotus is another team that looks very close to securing a victory and that has really spiced up the competition.

“Barcelona can be a funny circuit: we all test there so regularly that every driver knows it like the back of his hand, yet it can still be an extremely tricky place to get absolutely right,” Jenson Button said. “But, because every team is so dialled in to the track, even having a well-sorted car isn’t necessarily the answer because it’s sometimes the smallest differences that determine the order.”

“You need to have absolutely every box ticked if you’re going to win at Barcelona. It’s a place that punishes poor balance like almost nowhere else,” the 2009 world champion added.

Red Bull driver Sebastian Vettel also reckoned that it is difficult to predict the winner of the race but added that the team with the most aerodynamic car will win.

McLaren principal Martin Whitmarsh also said that the balance of all the teams is so refined this season that the slightest imperfections become highlighted and that slight mistake can haunt you for the entire race. So the idea is to not to make any mistakes.

The Spanish Grand Prix is scheduled for May 13, 2012.
