In quite a best possible way to gain political point scoring, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) filed a petition in the Supreme Court against Speaker National Assembly Fehmida Mirza’s ruling in favor of Prime Minister Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani in the contempt of court case.

In order to prove itself a real opposition in the country, the PML-N moved the apex court against the premier, who wasn’t outdone by political upstart.

PML-N MNA from Sialkot Khawaja Muhammad Asif filed the petition, challenging speaker’s ruling in which she refused to forward a disqualification move against the premier of his own party to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP).

Filing the petition under Article 184(3) of the Constitution, the MNA argued that Prime Minister Gilani stands disqualified in light of the Supreme Court’s judgment and that he should be barred from performing duties as chief executive of the country.

The petitioner observed, “Yes, I have prepared the petition and filed it to the apex court. Of course, I am doing it with the permission of my party”.

He made Speaker Fehmida Mirza, Prime Minister Gilani and the federation through the law secretary parties in the case.

Khawaja Asif described the premier as an MNA and not as the prime minister, as the PML-N does not recognize him chief executive of the country.

Requesting the Supreme Court to declare the speaker’s ruling arbitrary and illegal, the petitioner asked the court to restrain Gilnai from performing his duties as prime minister and member national assembly until final adjudication of the request.

He also asked the court, “Direct the Election Commission of Pakistan to expeditiously decide the question of Mr Gilani’s disqualification as required under Article 63(3)”.

Prime Minister Gilani was convicted for contempt of court charges for not writing a letter to the Swiss authorities for reopening cases against his boss, President Asif Ali Zardari.

The latest development comes after the ruling Pakistan Peoples’ Party (PPP) decided not to file an appeal against the prime minister’s conviction and his token punishment.

It is vital to mention here that the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) was also announced to file a petition against the speaker’s ruling.
