Prime Minister Gilani hints new provinces before elections

In a bid to acquire public support, Prime Minister Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani has said that the new province will be created before the next elections, clarifying that there was no link between the upcoming general elections and the national budget.

The premier while speaking to the media said that the elections will be held according to schedule. “Transition of power from the democratically elected government to the next elected government should be smooth and it should not be through any unconstitutional manner”, he added.

While referring to the law and order situation in Karachi, Gilani stated that the city was an economic hub for the country where they couldn’t afford to have any chaos.  He observed, “The city should be divided in administrative units and that intelligence was being provided to Sindh government for maintaining peace in the provincial capital”.

In his view, every possible assistance was being extended to Balochistan government for establishment of law and order in the troubled province.

Replying to a    query, the premier said matter of his disqualification came to an end with the speaker’s ruling.

“The court referred the matter to the speaker in line with the Constitution and the she came to a decision under the same Constitution,” he asserted.

While speaking to state-run Television, he said this would be the first in the history of the country to have presented the 5th budget and transfer power to the next elected Government.

When he was asked to comment on reports that he might resign after presenting the budget‚ the Prime Minister said why he would resign after having so much achievements to his credit.

He said elections would be held on time, answering in affirmative that a new province in Punjab would be created before the next general elections.

To a question the premier said country’s defence needs are more than the country can spare financial resources because of economic conditions.

He said during current financial year the Government released the allocated 300 billion rupees for Public Sector Development Programme and allocations for next year PSDP would be 360 billion rupees.
