Prime Minister Gilani terms national security govt’s top priority

Prime Minister Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani on Monday termed terrorism and law and order situation as the country’s most important issues, saying that national security was at the center of the government’s priority.

Addressing a ceremony at the Command and Staff College in Quetta, the premier said security challenges were never neglected by the government while comprehensive steps were taken to confront such issues.

He said the country had been adversely affected by terrorism as billions of dollars were lost in the war on terror, adding that they sacrificed immensely in order to defend other countries.

Gilani, who is currently visiting the province, said thousands of soldiers and patriotic men lost their lives for national security of the country. He, however, vowed that their sacrifices will not go in vain.

Commenting about the prices of the petroleum products, the prime minister noted that economic development and national stability were correlative and these prices affected many countries including Pakistan.

He observed, “The International Monetary Fund (IMF) sanctioned loans on the condition of raising electricity tariff”.

With the policies of the incumbent, the  national GDP witnessed growth while the Karachi Stock Exchange also rose to 13 billion dollars, he added.

He was optimistic that the country’s resources will be utilized for the betterment of people, urging the institutions to work together for public welfare.

He informed that the present government spent Rs 3 billion for the rescue and rehabilitation of rain and flood victims, claiming to reduce the inflation rate to single digit.

Gilani noted, “Our foreign exchange reserves stand at 16.3 billion dollars. Our exports last year reached twenty five billion dollars historic mark. He said we are maintaining this tempo despite global recession”.

He highlighted work of the present government saying it was pursuing reforms agenda to alleviate poverty and ensure fiscal responsibility and good governance in the country.

The government enhanced the support prices of different crops in line with the international market for the development of rural economy, he added.

The premier was of the opinion that the country had registered unprecedented production of wheat‚ cotton‚ rice and sugarcane and consequently they exported such items.

Commending the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP)‚ Gilani said 180 billion rupees have been spend under this programme and presently seven million people are benefiting from it.
