Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry starts proceedings against his son

The Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Pakistan Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry started proceedings against his own son, Arsalan Ifthikhar, today as he has been accused of receiving a bribe worth Rs 400 million by a real estate tycoon for the purpose of having
sway over some cases in the apex court of the country.

The Chief Justice of Pakistan is not the only person who will be hearing the matter, the case has come in front of a three judge bench instead which is led by the CJ Iftikhar Chaudhry.

The son of the Chief Justice is being accused of taking money from Malik Riaz Hussain, the real estate tycoon and owner of the community Bahria Town who is also one of the country’s richest men.

The following statement was issued by the Supreme Court of the country regarding the matter at hand, “It is reported that the said Malik Riaz Hussain paid Rs 300-400 million to Arsalan and also sponsored his foreign visits. It is alleged that these favours
were extended to Arsalan so as to influence his father, the Chief Justice of Pakistan, to have a soft corner for Malik Riaz Hussain and get favours in his cases pending before the Supreme Court.”

Before the hearing, Iftikhar told reporters he was innocent and that the Chief Justice had told him not to return home till the matter was settled by the apex court. Despite the fact that Malik Riaz is the key person in the case, he failed to make an appearance
before the Supreme Court today. His aide told the bench that he was in Britain for medical treatment. The tycoon is facing a number of cases in the Supreme Court. These cases were filed by a number of persons who have accused Hussain of grabbing large chunks
of land and merging them into Bahria Town.

Media commentators have questioned the timing of the leaks regarding links between the business tycoon, who is known to be close to the ruling Pakistan People’s Party, and the Chief Justice’s son.

The Supreme Court of Pakistan has been involved in some critical decisions which include holding the Prime Minister of the country under contempt and suspending the Interior Minister of Pakistan.
