In what appeared to be a reply to the judiciary, Prime Minister Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani directed the cabinet division to reinstate Rehman Malik as his advisor on interior affairs.

The latest development came a day after the Supreme Court suspended Rehman Malik’s senate membership over dual nationality case.

As per the prime minister’s directives, the cabinet division issued the notification for the reinstatement of the former interior minister as advisor, clarifying that he held the same post in 2008 prior to becoming a member of the Senate.

He has been given charge of the interior ministry as advisor to the prime minister and he will now be allowed to attend the National Assembly (NA) and the Senate sessions.

A senior official of the prime minister secretariat officially confirming the notification said that Malik will hold this post until the verdict of the Supreme Court.

Earlier, Malik had stopped visiting the Interior Ministry since the Supreme Court suspended his Senate membership. According to the reports, the former minister also removed the national flag from his car and had decided to not be attending the future Senate sessions.

The Supreme Court of Pakistan had earlier suspended the Senate membership of Interior Minister Rehman Malik while hearing the dual nationality case

While speaking to the media, the advisor to the minister said that he had taken off Pakistan flag from his house and his car, adding that he has not been informed about him being appointed as the interior ministry adviser.

The court had issued the order after Advocate Azhar Chaudhry, representing Malik, had shown reluctance to submit a declaration by the UKBA to establish that his client had surrendered the British nationality.

The court had also noted that the process of renouncing British citizenship had been started by the minister on May 29 much after the present proceedings and that he was a foreign national when he submitted his nomination papers to become PPP senator.

Therefore, the order said, Malik was not qualified to contest the Senate elections under Article 63(1 c) of the Constitution which disqualified a person as member of the parliament who ceases to be a citizen of Pakistan or acquires the citizenship of another country.
