President Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Nawaz Sharif said India was inspired by the initiatives taken by his government when he was prime minister of the country.

The two-time former premier of the country while speaking to the media observed, “India’s reforms were initiated in the nineties by the Narsehma Rao government after getting inspired by the industrial reforms introduced by the PML-N government in Pakistan”.

According to the report, Nawaz Sharif adopted neo-liberal policies and privatized several state-owned businesses during his first term as prime minister in 1990.

In June 1991, Rao became India’s prime minister and appointed Manmohan Singh as finance minister.

Soon the rupee was devalued and Rao, who also held the portfolio of Ministry of Industries, abolished industrial licensing and other socialist measures which India had adopted until then.

Flaying criticism at the leaderships of both the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) and former military ruler General (Retd) Pervez Musharraf, he noted, “Pakistan would have been on the path of economic growth by now it not for the corrupt governments that followed later”.

The PML-N president also blamed the two parties for the increase in conflict and militancy in Pakistan.

The former prime minister also called upon Pakistani nationals living abroad to come forward and help change Pakistan and contribute towards its economic development. The only way for Pakistan to once again move forward towards economic progress and social stability is returning him to power, he added.

Earlier while speaking to a gathering of Pakistani professionals and businessmen in Dubai, he encouraged them to play a role for the development and progress of the country.

Nawaz Shari highlighted the investment opportunities in Pakistan, saying that despite the challenges that we face Pakistan presents are host of investment opportunities and encouraged the businessmen to consider Pakistan as a destination of investment particularly in the agricultural sector.

In his view, the close geographical proximity between UAE and Pakistan has many possibilities and it is in the interest of both countries to expand their business, and trade activity.
