Chief Justice’s son in the dock

In what appeared to be a blow for Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry who had meticulously pursued cases of perceived corruption against politicians in power is witnessing his own son, Dr. Arsalan in the dock on similar charges.

According to the media reports Malik Raiz, the business tycoon, invested the finance of the foreign tours of Arsalan Chaudhry and his family in 2009, 2010 and 2011.

It was quite a lavish affair, as an expensive London apartment was booked for a month in one alone case. A rented Range Rovers along with shopping and gifts was also part of the package.

One of few journalists who have meetings with Malik Raiz disclosed that Arsalan’s foreign trips were organized by Behria Town through a businessman who works for the real estate tycoons and has been close friend of Chief Justice ‘s son.

The point of concern is that whether it was a case of entrapment of a raw young man or a accordant affair between Arsalan Chaudhry and his investor.

Spending lots of money and using facilities at someone else’s expense year after year leads to serious queries over dubious character of Arsalan Chaudhry. But the Chief Justice’s uprightness is unquestionable.

A three-judge bench heard the cases against Behria Town and never by Iftikhar Chaudhry alone. However, there are questions to be asked regarding chief justice’s judgment as a father.

Arsalan went abroad year after year and his family was accompanied with him in these trips.

Did the Chief Justice try to find out how his son had managed to acquire so much wealth in a short time?

Did he ever ask his son who had given him the money for investment in his construction and telecommunication business that according to Arsalan is worth Rs 900 million now with over 400 employees?

Did Arsalan possess enough collateral to borrow the funds from a bank? What were the terms and conditions connected with the funds provided and what were the obligations undertaken by Arsalan in return for the favor?

Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry made a good decision to dissociate himself from the bench hearing the case. All eyes will be focused on the new bench as it proceeds with the case.

Every aspect of the matter should be thoroughly investigated as justice should not only be done but seen by all and sundry to have been done.

CJ is not responsible for son’s action. But it so gratifying to note that CJ the Father
has initiated action against his son.

I knew it, I knew it. Musharraf had tried telling us about CJ son. He’s corrupt beyond a doubt. He’s a grown man but still this article writes wether it is an “entrapment of a raw young man”. Come on now is he with doctor degree a raw young man? Taking money/gifts for illegal use is not entrapment. Both are corrupt. How a national servant made all these millions for his son?

CJ has been very supportive and has misused his position on various occasion in the past for his son. It was him who fowl played from getting admission to medical college to inducting his son into police service.

Now his whole family is involved in this scam. How one can expect him to be fair when his track record is of misusing his official position to the benefit of his son in the past.

If CJ’s hands are clean (which one feels are), he should preferably tender his resignation or at least go on leave till this matter is under investigation. For, his being around will hugely influence both the process and the outcome of this case! Whereas, conditional resignation will make him more popular and a true hero who is not afraid to face the truth!

Unless Arsalan Iftikhar is a mindlessly dumb kid, he cannot be believed to have been entrapped. And the very suggestion that his father was in dark regarding the son’s suspicious activities, it sounds neither credible nor sensible. Critical and curious readers, especially the students of politics who follow the domestic state of affairs, would know the past of CJ himself. But never mind.
