In his first public statement on the burning issue of the country, Chairman Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Imran Kahn extended his support to the judiciary in the alleged corruption scandal of Arsalan Chaudhry, the son of Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry.

In his message on social networking website, he observed, “I stand by judiciary and courageous Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry who took suo motu notice of Malik Raiz-Arsalan affair”.

He also praised the chief justice for detaching himself from the bench hearing the case against his son.

He noted, “Once again Chief Justice and the Supreme Court have thwarted an attempt to undermine the independent judicial system, by taking a principled position to stand by the law”.

Earlier in the week, information was leaked to certain media outlets claiming that the chief justice’s son, Dr Arsalan Iftikhar, received millions of rupees and foreign trips as bribe from Malik Riaz in return for pledges to settle all pending cases related to Bahria Town.

As the news spread on national media, Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry took a suo motu notice, and summoned his son and Malik Riaz to the apex court.

For the first time in the country’s judicial history, a son was summoned to the apex court by his father to probe a scandal that threatened the latter’s integrity.

Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry observed, “Though [Arsalan] is my son, he will be dealt in accordance with the law if found guilty. We can’t give concession to any party over the institution; and for the sake of its prestige, we can go to any extent”.

Although Arsalan Chaudhry denied many of the allegations, he confessed to some of them saying that this was his personal business dealing.

After preliminary hearing on Thursday, he detached himself from the bench and the remaining two members continued the hearings.
