Try Musa Gilani if you can’t try your own son; Gilani urges to Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry

Drawing a quick parallel between him and Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, Prime Minister Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani asked the latter to carry out investigations against his son if he couldn’t conduct probe against his own son, Arsalan Iftikhar.

While talking to media the premier observed, “I don’t have the right to investigate cases against my sons, and in the same way the rules of procedure constrain the CJ from hearing a case against his own son (Arsalan Iftikhar). I voluntarily surrendered my sons before the apex court for investigating the cases against them”.

However, he was keen to play down any political consequences of the case involving Arsalan Iftikhar, the son of Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry.

In reply to a query, he also rejected the possibility that the security forces would benefit from the case.

He asserted, “No political party can deny having friendly ties with real estate tycoon Malik Riaz and there must be something in him that all are his friends”.

The prime minister clarified that neither he nor his family demanded any special treatment for his sons facing trails in the corruption cases.

Commenting on the character of property tycoon Malik Raiz, Gilani said the business magnate had good ties with almost all powerful and influential people in the country.

He flayed criticism at Chief Minister Punjab Shahbaz Sharif for setting up a camp office at Minar-e-Pakistan, saying that the provincial government had not contributed even a single megawatt to the system in the last four years.

He noted, “The government is working on new power projects and work is underway on hydro, solar, wind and other alternative modes too”.

Terming the resolution tabled in the Punjab Assembly to create Bahawalpur and South Punjab province a conspiracy, the premier said the National Assembly unanimously approved the creation of South Punjab a separate province.

Gilani also accused the PML-N, the main opposition party, of violating the institution, particularly the judiciary and parliament.

He was of the opinion that Punjab should move for party-based local government elections. In his view, the expatriates who contribute $12 billion annually should be given the right to vote and contest election.
