Honour of the Supreme Court must be upheld at all costs

While Arsalan Ifthikar may have managed to degrade his father’s reputation to new lows by being involved in a near proven financial embezzlement case, which not only involved Rs.300-400 million but also disclosed some personal relationships with other women, the honour of the Supreme Court must be upheld at all costs.

Chief Justice Ifthikar Muhammad Chaudhry has a near flawless reputation in the eyes of the public, but with recent disclosures about his son, who used his father’s position to influence real estate tycoon Malik Riaz and receive a huge sum of money, the same people are raising questions towards the CJ.

When contacting various bar associations across the country, Najam Sethi, an analyst on Geo News’ “Apas Ki Baat”, termed the lawyer community to be in “a state of shock”, which is definitely not a good sign.

The bar associations were the ones that actually started the movement for the restoration of judiciary and seeing them back down practically leaves the Chief Justice all by himself.

What must be acknowledged is the fact that the Supreme Court is one of the highest institutions of our country and a pillar of the nation. Without its honour and dignity being upheld, there will be nowhere the common man will be able to look towards for justice.

It is not an issue about the Chief Justice as a person, but of his office which must be respected. Seeing how a few days earlier, Ifthikar Muhammad Chauhdry termed calling in the chief of army staff if he needed to was certainly a good step in strengthening the rule of law, but some also regard it as the reason for the opposition taking place against him.

Arsalan Ifthikar has made a big mistake being in contact with such people knowingly that his father is the Chief Justice of this country, which will most probably haunt Ifthikar Chaudhry for years to come after saying that he does not know what his son’s business is.

He might be an individual with every right, but being a father, the Chief Justice should keep his son in order before attempting to sort out matters of national importance. Directly or indirectly, a father is always responsible for the action of their children and in this case, there is no exception.

Taking on the secret agencies and government was an unprecedented step by Ifthikar Muhammad Chaudhry, but being in a country in which lawlessness prevails, steps should be taken with thorough planning. You cannot take everyone on at the same time and expect nothing to backfire.

The Supreme Court is the most respected institution in any country and we must keep it that way if we expect to be dealt justice when the time comes to call on the superior courts in handling our issues.
