Ottis Gibson admits West Indies not favourite in England ODIs

West Indian head coach has admitted the reality that his side will not be the favourite in the upcoming One Day International (ODI) series against England, starting with the opening encounter at Southampton on Saturday.

After suffering an embarrassing 2-0 defeat in the Test series, the Windies are determined to bounce back. They have bright chances of displaying a wonderful show in the limited-over cricket especially after Chris Gayle’s comeback.

The belligerent opening batsman recently made his way to the national setup after resolving his conflicts with the West Indian Cricket Board. On the other hand, the greats like Dwayne Bravo, Keiron Pollard and Sunil Narine are available to make West Indies’
ODI side a very strong unit.

Despite having plenty of dangerous one-day cricketers in the side, Gibson is not ready to be over-confident, saying that the guys need to give their best shot in order to beat England.

"I don’t think you can go away from home and count yourself as favorites. Like I said, I believe that we’ve got some good players back now, we’ve got a very strong team on paper but it is about going out and executing. We will be planning well over the next
couple of days for England and looking to do the right things, sticking to the basics as always and trying to win this series," said Gibson.

He added, "We haven’t won a series away from home for a long time. We last won in Bangladesh so this will be a good test for us and a good opportunity for us to see where we are as a one-day side. We’ve had some success against Australia. We played quite
well and probably should have won that series at home so this one is a good opportunity for us to get stuck in."

The coach, however, pointed that the Caribbean side has the guts to challenge England in the 50-over format. He was not reluctant to say that the top-order carries a lot of responsibility and if West Indies want to do something special, the top-order batsman
will have to do better than what they did in the Test series.
