The Legendary ghazal singer of Pakistan, Mehdi Hassan, was suffering from lung, chest and urinary aliments for the past twelve years but he finally  lost his battle last Wednesday at the Agha Khan Hospital in Karachi and Ali Zafar has requested the government to build an institution on his name so that in order to continue his legacy.

Ali Zafar, a musician, composer, song writer, singer, actor, painter and model, has shown his grief over the demise of the ghazal maestro, who had a huge fan following in all over the world.

“Mehdi Hassan moves on and lives forever. Leaving us with a legacy of music, magic, memories and so much more than words can describe.”

He added, “In my opinion, govt should build an institution on his name to continue his legacy through young/aspiring and established singers/musicians.”

Along with Ali Zafar, many superstars of the Bollywood industry also paid their respect to the Shahenshah-e-ghazal and one of them is Shah Rukh Kahn, who is often referred to as the King of Bollywood.

Shahrukh Khan tweeted, “Memories of my mom cooking in a grimy kitchen as it rained outside, while Mehdi Hassan floated out of a Beltek 2 in 1.”

He also shared few lines from his famous ghazal, “Zindagi mein toh sabhi pyaar kiya karte hain… main toh meri jaan, markrr bhi tumhein chahoonga… (Everybody loves during their lives, I will love you even when I am dead).”

Mehdi Hassan was born in 1927 into a family of traditional musicians in a village called Luna in Rajasthan, India. He migrated to Pakistan at the age of 20 and started his signing career in 1957, which went on for 55 long years.

Some of the famous ghazals include ‘Zindagi mein tu sab he pyar kiya karatay hain’, ‘Ab k hm bicharay’, ‘Gulon main rang’, Pyar bharay do sharmilain nain’, ‘Main hosh main tha tu’.

During his life, Mehdi Hassan was honoured with ‘Tamgha-e-Imtiaz’, ‘Pride of Performance’ and ‘Hilal-e-Imtiaz’ by the Government of Pakistan. He was also presented with ‘Gorkha Dakshina Bahu’ award by the Government of Nepal.

Well, all said and done, Mehdi Hassan was certainly a great asset to the music world but let’s see if Pakistani government takes any notice of what Ali Zafar has said.
