Unavailability of navigation and speech to text services on iPhone 3GS and 4 is potential fragmentation – Part 2

Moreover, there are third-party applications on App Store that offer both turn-by-turn navigation and voice recognition services. If a third-party software can run on an iPhone 3GS than why not Apple’s own. Even a layman knows that third-party software are always heavier than the company’s own version built into the operating system.

If 3GS and 4 can run third-party version of the same services than why in the world can’t Apple develop one of its own for these devices. This is deliberate segregation that might turn into fragmentation as some experts put it. Apple might be saying that the hardware in 3GS and 4 is not capable enough but the fact of the matter is that the company is trying to sell as many latest devices as they can.

Another reason why Apple should not differentiate between the devices, at least the ones it is still officially selling, is that the company’s evolution cycle is very short. It releases new versions of the iOS devices every year and that is quite fast even for the tech-savvy. For the reason that carrier contracts are mostly two-year long, one has to keep with an Apple device on biannual terms.

This is why iPhone 4 users are angry at the company’s decision to keep the 2011 and previous version out of the new updates like turn-by-turn navigation.

As I mentioned in another post, the navigation services that Apple is offering in the upcoming iOS has potential of changing the Nav market altogether. The new application called Maps offers a complete set of maps down to the street details and to top that it offers navigation services as well.

This way Apple completely replaces a full set of Sat/Nav equipment that the likes of Garmin and TomTom offer.

However, iPhone 4 and 3GS are kept out of the loop and this is condescending attitude on Apple’s part.
