Microsoft finally launches Windows-based tablets catering to both iPad- and Amazon-dominated segments – Part 2

Microsoft has launched what was needed since the production of such devices started. A proper tablet was always in need with a processor that aptly replaces a laptop, and a physical keyboard that should not compromise on the basic aesthetics of the device.

The new line of tablets is divided into two basic versions, the tuned down Surface RT that will cater to the market segment created by Amazon, and Windows 8 with all the goodies from Microsoft that will address the more professional segment.

The good news is that the basic features of both versions are the same. Both come in 10.6-inch touch sensitive screen giving the applications more real estate to dwell on and USB, HDMI ports, et cetera. The slates are covered in magnesium cases that Microsoft has named as VaporMg, pronounced as Vapor Mag.

What is different in both devices is mainly the operating system. The Surface RT comes equipped with the tuned down version of Windows 8 with basic functionalities and is called Windows RT. The tablet runs on mobile processing ARM CPUs. By looks of it, the tablet will have the new Tegra 3 quad-core processor, though the company did not issue any official statement on processor.

The RT uses only the Metro user interface of the new Windows 8. Microsoft has restricted the tablet only the UI to keep things simple. However, it can download Metro-compatible applications from the Marketplace. A mobile version of the Office suite is also pre-installed in the new tablet, without any extra charge.

There are USB 2.0, HDMI and SDXC card slots on the edges and it has HD cameras both in the front and rear. The display looks sharp but Microsoft refrained from elaborating on the resolution.
