Senate Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs, Kashmir Affairs and Gilgit-Baltistan on Wednesday said that the United States could not get desired results in the region, urging it to offer apology over the NATO attack that killed 24 Pakistan troops at Salala check-posts.

Chairman of Committee Senator Haji Adeel while addressing the concluding session of the two-day sitting observed, “Pakistan places its bilateral relationship with the US in high regard but it would never compromise on its sovereignty”.

Moreover, he said that the US besides taking concrete steps for putting the bilateral ties on the right track should respect parliamentary resolutions and offer apology for the deadliest attack.

Endorsing Islamabad’s demands for imposing charges on the land route for allied forces battling in Afghanistan, the committee reviewed the losses inflicted by the free-of-charge NATO supplies.

Earlier, Foreign Secretary Jalil Abbas Jilani briefed the panel on ongoing negotiations between Pakistan and the US, especially regarding the resumption of supplies for the allied forces. He also briefed the committee on developments for ensuring peace and stability in the region and the role played by Pakistan at different international levels.

Later, the panel issued directives to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to pay special attention to develop and further strengthen bilateral relationships with countries in South Asia, Gulf and Central Asian States.

The committee thoroughly discussed Pakistan’s relations with Central Asian States, besides SAARC and OIC countries. Its members expressed satisfaction over the fact that the country’s foreign policy was now reflecting the aspirations of people of the land.

The members also proposed the government to concentrate on enhancing trade and business relationships with regional players, besides cooperating in the energy sector.

The members stressed upon the ministry to take steps for making Pakistani missions abroad proactive in promoting a soft image of the country and resolve issues of the Pakistani community living abroad.

Senators Aitzaz Ahsan, Muhammad Jehangir Badar, Syeda Sughra Imam and Mushahid Hussain Syed attended the meeting, among others.
