Fierce fighting in the heart of Damascus

Heavy fighting between Syrian army and rebels forces broke out this Tuesday, 8 km from the centre of the capital according to Observatoire Syrien de le droits humaines

According to the NGO, one person was killed during the fighting but it has not been clarified whether the victim was a soldier, a civilian or a rebel.

“Fierce fighting is taking place around the positions of the Republican Guard at Qadsaya and al-Hama which lies 8 km near the heart of Damascus,” said Rami Abdel Rahman, the president of OSDH.

Damascus is the most secure city in Syria and the control stations, government buildings and the area around the presidential palace is ultra secure. However, fighting has intensified in recent weeks near the capital but the recent fights of Tuesday are
the most violent ones in the area.

“This is the first time the regime has used heavy artillery in fighting in proximity to the capital.”

In earlier clashes, in and around the capital, only light artillery was used by Bashar Al-Assad’s army.

“This development is important because it is the heaviest fighting in the area, has reached the heart of the capital.”

The suburbs have become home to the troops as they hold great importance to the Republican Guard. Syrian army stormed the neighbourhood of Barze with heavy military vehicles, amid heavy gunfire.

Elsewhere in the war-torn country, city of Saraqeb in the rebel province of Idleb was bombed with more than twenty shells in half an hour. A car bomb exploded in the same region near a police checkpoint killing two members of the security service.
