New Android OS version anticipated to show up at Google I/O this week

Electronic media is preparing for Google’s 2012 developers’ summit scheduled from June 27 through 29. All eyes are fixed at San Francisco’s Moscone Center for the launch of new products from search engine giant. Among others, the company is expected to launch a new version of Android.

At first, the new version was touted to be the fifth iteration of Android, named Jelly Bean, however, latest developments have suggested that it will be ‘point one’ upgrade to the currently trending Android 4.0, or commonly known as Ice Cream Sandwich.

It is now the first time that yearly upgrade to mobile operating system has received the rank of a decimal instead of a whole number. 2.0 was succeeded by 2.1 and so on and so forth. However, the competition has spiked up in the last one year with Apple announcing iOS 5 and iOS 6 within the tenure of ICS and Microsoft moving forward with Windows Phone 8 within two years of Windows Phone 7 release. This calls for a big bump in upgrade rather than a mere update.

The new operating system will be pre-installed in the new tablet from Google. The company is planning to move into the OEM business with a reportedly 7-inch tablet that is designed a priced to take a stab a Kindle Fire’s market share. Amazon got off to a good start with the new entry-level 7-inch tablet priced at $199. Google is planning to release a new slate within the same price bracket.

The new operating system is expected to take the stage shortly after the release of the tablet, which is touted to be the major attraction at the event. However, unlike the device, Google and its software partners have kept the new operating system in closed confines so far. There are no news on what is expected in the new OS.

However, this is for sure that Jelly Bean is expected to arrive in the new tablet and a line of new smartphone. Google has previously taken an OEM shot at a smartphone called Nexus One. According to the company, five new Nexus handsets will be released later this year. There is strong reason to believe that the quintet will be equipped with Jelly Bean.

Google will be broadcasting the event live on YouTube from June 27 to 29.
