Babar Awan vows to fight his case in Supreme Court

After having an exchange of harsh words between Justice Athar Saeed and former law minister Babar Awan, the latter said he himself will contest the contempt of court case.
Speaking to the media he observed, “One sided proceeding is taking place against me and now I, myself, will fight the contempt of court case against me”.
A two-judge bench of the Supreme Court comprising Justice Aijaz Afzal and Athar Saeed resumed the hearing of contempt case against Babar Awan. The altercation took place when Justice Saeed asked Babar Awan to sit down and to not dictate the court.
Senator Babar Awan remarked during course of hearing, “One sided proceeding is going on against me. Me and my lawyer are not being given chance to speak. I suspend the license of my lawyer and now I will face my case”.
Upon which, Justice Aijaz Afzal said that there was a proper way and behavior to address the court. Addressing to the counsel for Babar Awan, the judge asked him to make his client understand that what the ways to behave in the court rooms are.
Ali Zafar, the lawyer representing Awan replied that his client want to present his arguments in his self defencne. On which, the judge noted, “Babar Awan is a Senator and a lawyer and we will completely listen to him”.
Earlier, Babar Awan had contended before the apex court that he did not want his trial on contempt charges based on submission of single evidence, like in the case of Pakistani neuroscientist Dr Aafia Siddiqui in the United States (US).
On this, the bench had stopped him for drawing a parallel between his contempt of court trial and Dr Aafia’s case.
The former law minister is facing contempt of court charge for his media taunt against the apex court.
While addressing a news conference, Babar Awan had severely criticized the superior judiciary on December 01, 2011 after the Supreme Court ordered an inquiry into the memogate scandal under the supervision of Tariq Khosa.
Being a brother of Mr. Khosa, Awan attacked a sitting judge of the apex court in the press briefing.
The apex court had indicted him of the contempt charges, saying that Babar Awan had committed contempt by ridiculing the superior judiciary.
