Google’s new 7-inch tablet, Nexus 7: Hands-on Review – Part 1

Google, Inc. released a new tablet marketed directly under the company’s banner. Though its hardware is manufactured by Asus, Google’s hardware partner in tablets and smartphones, the device name Nexus 7 is a trademark of the search engine.

The company showcased the tablet at annual developers’ conference, Google I/O, on June 27, 2012. It boasts a 7-inch display and is priced at $199. For a number of reasons, experts are of the opinion that the new tablet is a direct response to Amazon’s Kindle Fire that is on fire sale since its official release in the second half of 2011.

The tablet runs Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, also announced at the event following the release of the tablet. Though the price has been kept exactly the same as the Kindle Fire, the specs are no where near the same.

The new Nexus 7 has all the top-end hardware and software specification that can be found in 10-inch tablets with the likes of Asus Transformer Pad series and the iPad series. The tablet is one tough piece of electronic that will certainly give all the slates in the market a run for their money.

There are a number of reasons why one should think that the new Nexus is directly attacking Amazon’s 7-inch Fire. Some of them are the size, the interface and above all the price. There is not a single tablet in the market that has all the top-level hardware features and the price is clocked at $199, even for the trim-level version.

However, by trim-level it does not mean that new tablet has different specs for the $199 and $249 version. Both have the same processor, RAM, GPU and other hardware components down to the IPS panel. The only difference is the memory; the 8GB model is priced at the aforementioned $100 and the 16 GB version is available for $249.
