MacBook Pro takes new shape, ModBook Pro, a tablet with the goodies of a laptop

MacBooks have not always been laptops in the history. Long before the advent of iPad from Apple, there lived Mac-based tablets called ModBooks, though not from Apple but from another company called Axiotron, Inc. The same tablets made their way to the market again this year.

The company, Axiotron, has long vanished from technology industry but another company, the tablet’s namesake, ModBook, Inc., has replaced it, with the chief designer the same person who designed the original ModBook back in the early 2000s.

What the company does is that it takes a normal MacBook, in previous cases the MacBook and in current scenario the new MacBook Pro 13-inch model, and re-engineers it to make a pen-touch-sensitive tablet running the latest Mac OS X.

The new ModBook is named ModBook Pro and it takes the new MacBook Pro 13.3-inch model, tweaks it to make a tablet, that is extremely sensitive to pen interaction.

The company defines its engineering process as:

“The Modbook Pro enclosure conversion kit incorporates and completely encases the original hardware of a new Apple MacBook Pro 13.3-inch base system running OS X Mountain Lion. In addition, the Modbook Pro contains a state-of-the- art digitizer from the industry leader in pen tablet technology, Wacom, offering 512 levels of pen pressure sensitivity — more than any other tablet computer on the market. And the Modbook Pro’s pen interface features tough and scratch-resistant ForceGlass, providing an etched, paper-emulating drawing and writing surface.”

Though the ModBooks, released previously, were all bulky compared to any other tablet in the market, they were the most efficient machines with high-performing gadgetry inside.

However, there are certain constraints to the ModBooks, especially the touch sensitivity. The tablet market has changed a lot since 2008, the last time we saw a ModBook. There are not iOS and Android devices with capacitive touch screen that do not even need styluses for most of the work.

However, for professional use this might be exactly what everyone needs. Moreover, the pen sensitivity has been increased.

The prices will be announced in the coming few weeks and product will reach the shelves in Fall 2012.
