Chairman National Accountability Bureau (NAB) Admiral (Retd) Fasih Bokhari on Saturday said that joint-investigation team to probe Arsalan Iftikhar for allegedly taking financial benefits from Malik Riaz to settle his cases in the Supreme Court.

Speaking to the media, Bokhari explained that the team will be comprised officials of the NAB, the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) and police. Director General of the Financial Crimes Department of NAB will head the probe committee, he added.

Speaking on the issue of impartial investigation, he observed, “It doesn’t matter if we know Malik Riaz or Nawaz Sharif, the investigation will be unbiased. I have never taken any money from Malik Riaz”.

Commenting Arsalan Iftikhar’ letter which he sent through his counsel, Bokhari said it was insolent and tantamount to the contempt of court. He added, “The letter is threatening, it uses threatening language and a notice will be taken in this regard”.

While shedding lights on corruption in the country, the NAB chairman said billions of rupees were being plundered in the government institutions on daily basis.

Although the authority had recovered more than Rs 2 billions, it was only small part of the total corruption money.

In his view, the society and system had become corrupt, adding that the national exchequer is facing up to Rs 8 billion loss every day. He clarified that they were mandated to recover the stolen money not prosecute the criminals.

He informed the media, “The authority, till now, has recovered Rs235 billion for the treasury but this is not enough. The government has given approval for recruiting 300 new investigators”.

Replying to a query about Rental Power Project (RPPs) case, he asked whether the FIA had placed Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf’s name on the Exit Control List (ECL) heretofore.

Before holding top slot of the country, Ashraf was interrogated for three hours, he added.

The NAB chairman informed the media that Sharif Brothers’ case could recover Rs 3 billion, Swiss case Rs 6 billion while the case of former Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) chairman Tauqeer Sadiq could yield Rs55 billion to the exchequer.
