Amir Khan vs. Danny Garcia: Khan’s longest training camp about to end

Wednesday, July 4th, 2012 11:55:32 by

While most analysts were fearing Amir Khan would end up overtraining himself, the Bolton proud has disregarded the notion. The former IBF and WBA light welterweight titlist spoke about his long training camp, assuring fans that he is not exhausted instead he feels fresh.

“I started training for the Peterson fight at the end of February, so it will be a long camp come fight night against Garcia,” said Khan.

Khan has been training since February, for his grudge rematch against Peterson that never happened. The British-Pakistani boxer did take a brief break from training. He was at Pacquiao’s Baguio City training camp with Freddie Roach to train during April.

“I’ve had an 18 or 19 week training camp, by the time of the fight, but there’s no chance of burnout,” the Bolton proud iterated.

He added, “We do everything right. We have balanced the training quite well and not gone too hard and nor will it be too easy. I always have an intense training camp, but it’s a bit different this time because I’ve changed conditioning coach to Ruben Tabares. Ruben has worked with David Haye and he is making me work harder. It’s been a new challenge, this training camp, which has kept me fresh.”

Khan faces WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia on July 14 at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino in Las Vegas. The fight was initially for Garcia’s belt, but now it is a title unification bout since the WBA light welterweight belt is on the line too.

Khan has time and again emphasized the value of this fight for his career. According to him, he needs to beat Garcia in order to cement his legacy at 140-pounds, since he will be moving to a higher weight after Garcia’s test. For now, Khan feels confident that he is all ready to take on the unbeaten American fighter. Garcia is dangerous but Khan believes he can be neutralised in the ring.
