Amir Khan vs. Danny Garcia: Who has the better trainer?

Thursday, July 5th, 2012 11:32:09 by

Amir Khan and Danny Garcia are moving towards an epic head-on collision, a chance for both the fighters to unify the WBC and the WBA title.

Among the various aspects that are being discussed by analysts and critics, comparison of both fighters’ trainers is a major one.

Freddie and Angel, both are undoubtedly considered best trainers in the world of boxing, who have achieved much success, laurels, accolades and praise in their respective capacity.

However, there are some factors that clearly prove that Freddie is the one who has the ability, talent, and wits to make a champion out of no one. Roach, who himself possesses a career of 53 bouts, is well known for aiding Manny in discovering his right hand.

Furthermore, it was Freddie who became the backbone of current WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Junior. In addition to the above names, Freddie is also the boxing coach of Ultimate fighting Championship’s former world welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre.

All the above mentioned names are today considered best in what they do and it is all because of Freddie’s priceless advice, ideas and above all training strategies. Roach is considered as a trainer with in-depth knowledge of the sport.

The best advantage that most probably helps Freddie in taking the right decisions while training a pugilist or fighter is his own personal brawling experience. Roach has fought some of the best names of his time, taking on men with styles that are currently prevalent in the sport.

These aspects separate Roach from other boxing trainers, and are by far the reasons why he was been bestowed by the prestigious Hall of Fame membership. Angel, on the other hand, has just one accomplishment in his whole career.

Not much is known about the father of the current WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia. Out of what is known, one thing is dominating and quite impressive, the discovering a champion out of a 10-year old kid.

Angel has, from the very beginning of Danny’s career, pushed his lad into seriously stiff and stern scenarios. Danny, might probably, is the only boxer who has a hefty 120 plus-bout amateur career. Interestingly, he has lost just 10 or 11 of those bouts.

The manner in which Danny has made his way to the top 10 ranks of the division, in mere two or three years is by far an unmatchable feat achieved by Garcia senior. It is this reason, why in a recent media interaction, Angel also bombarded Freddie’s credibility.

Angel while bashing Roach commented that he has not achieved much in his training career, adding that Roach’s clients include men who were already talented and self-made and just needed an advice or two.

Angel stated, “He’s a man like me, You know how he got there, like I’m getting there, by making champions. Anybody can make champions by them walking in your gym. Anybody can get champions like that. In my door, if they start walking up in here – i’ll be a legend too.”

Though Angel’s tone was a bit blunt and somewhat disrespectful yet he did put forth a strong argument. Converting an already trained individual into a champion is an easy task whereas guiding a 10-year-old by holding his finger and making him a champion is a hilltop accomplishment to achieve.

Freddie has proved several times that he is a world class trainer. Garcia senior has also done so. The only difference lies in the numbers. Roach has converted three, four men into champions whereas Angel has produced just one.

On July 14, 2012, the world will genuinely know who the best trainer is. If Danny wins Angel will prove that his every single word was right. If Roach loses, it will definitely seal the fact that his time is over.
