Imran Khan criticizes changes in contempt law

Criticizing changes in the contempt of court law, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan said the government’s recent move was aimed to weaken the superior judiciary in the country.

Speaking to the media the cricketer-turned-politician said, “The new legislation pertaining to contempt of court law would sabotage the rule of the law by weakening the judiciary. The primary focus of the rulers was to avoid accountability of their misdeeds and they are taking a number of steps to achieve that objective”.

Khan accused the government of being involved in corruption and making efforts to avoid accountability, saying that no effective accountability law was permitted to be passed in parliament.

He added that the government stared a sustained campaign to undermine the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) by inducting blue-eyed persons. The only institution standing in front of the tactics of the government was the judiciary, particularly the Supreme Court, he explained.

In his view, it was the court that had a consistent look at the corrupt practices of the ruling party. Declaring the Nation Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO) null and void was the most significant decision of the superior judiciary against the ruling Pakistan Peoples’ Party (PPP), he remarked.

Khan stated, “The nation knew that the NRO decision was not implemented because the prime minister was mandated by his superiors and the party to protect the corruption done by their leader”.

He was of the opinion that it was the issue that led Gilani to conviction under the contempt of court law. Subsequently, he was unseated as a member of parliament and as a consequence he had to leave the prime minister’s office.

This is the reason, he said, the government was mulling to weaken the judiciary by making ineffective the contempt of court law.

In his view, the legislators have lost their right to represent the people in the parliament after resuming NATO supply line.

He noted, “The government gave no regard even to a single point of the resolution passed in the Parliament on new terms of engagement with the US and reopened the supply routes for allied forces”.

He lamented the leaders set the country on path of destruction by looting and plundering of people’s wealth. He vowed that he would bring people’s money back in the country.
