Government faces opposition in getting bills passed in National Assembly

The government of Pakistan ruled by the Pakistan People’s Party is facing opposition in terms of the dual nationality issue as two upright legislators have voiced their views about opposing the bill if it gets put up in the National Assemble of the country
sometime next week.

The government of Pakistan has been planning and thinking of a way due to which they can grant immunity to those parliamentarians who possess a dual nationality. According to the Supreme Court of Pakistan, parliamentarians cannot be members of the National
Assembly if they hold a dual nationality. The Supreme Court of the country ruled by Chief Justice Iftikhaar Chaudary had previously suspended licenses of several members of the parliament based on the fact that they held dual nationality. It was said that
the suspension could be removed if the other nationality is let go off. Rehman Malik is one of the members of parliament who got a suspension order from the Supreme Court.

The government of Pakistan is not only having difficulties with the dual nationality bill, it is also facing opposition in getting another bill passed. The other bill deals with giving immunity to the provincial as well as federal government leaders from
being held in contempt of court. If the bill is passed and becomes a law, the Supreme Court will not be able to hold the provincial as well as government leaders in contempt for not obeying court orders.

Stress is being laid on the above mentioned bill after the Supreme Court of Pakistan held the former Prime Minister of the country Yousuf Raza Gilani in contempt for not obeying court orders to write to the Swiss probe in order to restart an investigation
against the President of the country Asif Ali Zardari as he was accused of being involved in a case of money laundering. The investigation about the case had come to its close after the signing of the National Reconciliation Ordinance during the time that
the President of the country was Pervez Musharraf.

However, after the NRO had been deemed illegal, the Supreme Court of the country had asked Yousuf Raza Gilani to get the investigation restarted but he failed to comply for which he was held in contempt and subsequently discharged from his duties.
