Resumption of NATO supply in interests of Islamabad, Kabul: Hina Rabbani Khar

Terming the resumption of NATO supply-line not only in the interest of Islamabad but also Kabul, Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar said that the stability in the region was interlinked.

While interviewing, she was of the opinion that peaceful Afghanistan was in the interest of the country.

She observed, “The fundamental cause leading to difficulties in ties between Pakistan and the United States was the trust deficit due to different incidents”.

Khar said Islamabad had made it clear to the American administration that crossing its red lines was not acceptable at all. In her view, the country had taken a firm stance in the aftermath of the Salala check-post incident and that it had refused to attend the Bonn conference despite severe pressure.

She was of the opinion that there was an opportunity to build ties with the US by making settlement of difficult issues between the two countries.

She noted, “We should use the opportunity and should not let it go. The process of engagement between Pakistan and the US had been in a state of pause”.

The foreign minister said the bilateral ties had been covered in non-transparency but the Pakistani government wanted to remove it once for all, adding that the incumbent and the people were on the same page on the issue of relations with the United States.

In her view, the government had reiterated its position on all the forums that drone attacks were counter-productive and against the sovereignty of the country.

She explained the position of the other side saying, “The American position on drone strikes was that it would continue the operations as it believed there were terrorists on the ground. We need to work on various anti-terrorism tools and coordinate our strategies”.

The foreign minister continued that it was not enough that the two countries only continue to state their positions as there was a time to move on.

The government, she clarified, had taken decisions in accordance with the guidelines provided in the parliament’s resolution unanimously passed after the Salala check-post attack.
