Amir Khan: I really needed a fight before Ramadan!

Former IBF and WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan will lock horns with Danny Garcia on July 14 at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada and he has commended Golden Boy Promotions for their efforts.

The 25-year-old Bolton’s finest, who is more commonly known as King Khan, has said he really wanted a fight before the Holy month of Ramadan and he is glad that his promoters have set it up for him so quickly.

“We were really lucky and I want to thank my promoters Golden Boy for making the fight with Danny Garcia so quickly,” said Khan. “I really needed a fight before Ramadan starts [in the third week in July] otherwise it would have been over 10 months that I would have been out for – not what you want when you are a 25-year-old fighter who’s in his prime.”

Khan wanted to move up to 147 lbs division last year but his dreams were quashed by Lamont Peterson, who secured a controversial split decision over him.

Later on, Peterson, known as Havoc, came positive on using illegal substance as a result to which one of his titles was stripped off.

Therefore, Khan and Garcia’s fight will now have the WBA title as well along with the WBC title. However, while sharing his thoughts with the media Khan insisted that drug testing should be made compulsory for every fighter.

“I think there’s really nothing that should be of concern to fighters signing up to random tests,” said Khan. “You see so many fighters getting caught because there are a lot of cheats in boxing – I’d never realised there were this many.

He added, “People used to point a finger at me. They’d say ‘Amir’s on something’ because I was boxing so well. I came on so much and I won world titles and beat bigger names and people were accusing me of being on something.”
