Connected Car: The concept is taking root in sedans, hatchbacks and now trucks – Part 1

American brands started the connected car trend a few years back. At the beginning the dashboard mounted stereo system was a mere conduit to the applications in the driver’s smartphone. It would play music and work as a voice command service provider. However, the concept has evolved and now automakers are rolling out cars that have their own built-in 3G transmitters.

There are however, automobiles in the market still boasting the smartphone connectivity for connected cars but the services have expanded from mere music players to full-on navigations systems and social networking channels. Though the number of cars offering the social networking services like Facebook, Pinterest, Twitter and others are fewer in the market but the trend is taking root gradually.

Hybrid cars mostly come equipped with in-built systems that either connect to the internet on their own or are partially dependent on smartphones for their 3G or 4G connectivity. The applications that can be milked range from navigation to Google and Bing searches, Yelp, internet radios, social networking and news feeds.

It is not a news that the likes of Ford, BMW, Mercedes and a host of Far East Asian brands are taping this concept but the way it is being adopted is rather amazing. The current market does not host only hybrids with connected car services but there are trucks, SUVs, sedans and hatchbacks as well. In fact, it was a hatchback that started this concept.
