Chairman National Accountability Bureau (NAB) Admiral (Retd) Fasih Bokhari has requested an accountability-court to reopen corruption cases against top leadership of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz.

The Chairman of the accountability bureau on recommendation of a special committee constituted by the NAB under the supervision of persecutor general signed an application requesting the court to reopen three references against Nawaz Sharif and Shahbaz Sharif.

NAB spokesperson Zafar Iqbal while speaking to the media observed, “On the recommendation of a special committee, the NAB chairman has signed an application requesting the accountability court to reopen three references against the Sharif brothers to contest quashment petition which was filed by the Sharif Brothers in the Lahore High Court in October 2011”.

The three cases against Sharif Brothers are Hudaibiya Paper Mills, Assets Beyond Known Sources of Income and the Ittefaq Foundry (Wilful Loan Default).

When Sharif Brothers were in exile the proceedings in the cases were adjourned sine die by the Accountability Court in 2001.

The accountability bureau filed a plea in 2007 to reopen the cases when they returned into the country from exile.

Although the application was accepted, the cases once again adjourned sine die by the accountability court. The court explained that the trial could be commenced if an application signed by NAB’s chief was submitted before the court.

Admiral (Retd) Fasih Bokhari formed a committee to decide reopening all cases pending against politicians. The spokesman stated, “The committee recommended filing of an application under the signature of the chairman for recommencement of these cases”.

He further said, “The special committee was in the process of scrutinizing the remaining cases against politicians and its findings/recommendations would be shared with the media.  Prime Minister’s Adviser on Interior Affairs Rehman Malik had also referred, in his capacity as interior minister, a case against the Sharif brothers to NAB two months ago”.

Senator Pervez Rashid of the PML-N, who is also spokesperson of the Punjab government, said that the accountability bureau hadn’t informed his party up till now.

He asserted, “If we receive any such notice, we will look into it and decide what to do. The cases had already been investigated three times in the past, first by the PPP government in 1988 and again by the PPP government in 1993 and the third time by former president Gen (retd) Pervez Musharraf”.

  1. Not Me

It is too little too late but better late than never. However, the Punjab HC which has stayed all cases against Sharifs would again save them and their corruption cases would be kept under the rug. The Punjab HC and PCO SC have no time for any other case except against PPP leaders.

  2. Nazia

PPP is still committed to politics of reconciliation and from the day one President Zardari said there would be no political victimization. Those who are saying that PPP has started victimization of PML-N chief are at fault. NAB is not a political party and has nothing to do with furthering a particular political agenda. The Chairperson NAB Admiral (Retd) Fasih Bokhari has said several times that NAB will not be used as a political tool. In the recent past, the organization has seen many difficulties, as there was even no chairperson during a certain period in 2010-11. It operated and survived and now it is being reorganised under the able supervision of its new chairperson. NAB is an independent entity and serving the nation with zeal and zest. NAB’s services are not hidden from anyone — whether it is the Double Shah scam, Canal Motors’ scam, al-Jannat Marketing, Bank of Punjab scam, Askaria Town case, Jaddah Town case, RPPs case, Pakistan Railways case, and last but not the least, the recent saving of Rs 47 billion from tax evasion of cellular companies. Any case where the national exchequer faced loss or the public at large became a victim, NAB has always brought back looted money from the hands of culprits and compensated the people of Pakistan. Therefore, the political parties and some media personnel accusing NAB for their personal gains are being unjust.
