Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf terms his visit to Afghanistan successful

Terming his maiden visit to Afghanistan as successful, Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf has said that the trilateral provided an opportunity to reiterate Islamabad’s obvious support for the political peace and reconciliation process in the region.

He further said the meeting with the political leadership of Afghanistan was productive and crucial because it provided a chance to dispel mutual misperceptions, which could have deepened without the direct involvement.

He observed, “The Afghan political leaders had immense good will for Pakistan and its people and considered them their great well wisher. I invited them to visit Pakistan to meet the political leaders of Pakistan and all of them accepted my invitation”.

PM Ashraf said that engagement at the government level and people-to-people contact was of great significance for bringing peace in the region. In his view, understanding reached in this way will surely have long lasting effects and chances of misunderstanding will be decreased.

Commending the decision of the Afghan government to grant multiple visas to Pakistani businessmen who were facing problems in this regard, he said such steps will bear fruit in the coming days.

Earlier, Afghan President Hamid Karzai announced that the government will facilitate the business community facing problems in getting visas and other issues.

Commenting on the national issues, the prime minister expressed satisfaction over the victory obtained by Abdul Qadir Gilani in the by-elections.

He noted, “The PPP was a truly federal party, which had broad-based support across the country and indeed was a great national asset. No other party on the political landscape of the country has such a wide-ranging support in the country as the PPP”.

In his view, it was of matter of pleasure and happiness the by-polls in Multan was declared free and fair by all stakeholders.

Terming Chief Election Commissioner Justice (Retd) Fakhruddin G Ebrahim a man of integrity, the prime minister said his selection for the top job in the Election Commission through consensus would pave the way for free, fair and impartial elections in the country.
