Former Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) chief Lt. General (Retd) Asad Durrani has submitted documents to the Supreme Court, revealing the names of those officers that assisted in distributing money in 1990 elections to influence the results.

He, however, requested the court that once he submits the secret documents, the court should treat them as classified.

A three-judge bench of the apex court headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry resumed the hearing of a petition filed by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Istiqlal chief Air Marshal (Retd) Asghar Khan in which he charged intelligence agencies with influencing the political process and prevent Pakistan Peoples’ Party (PPP) from winning the polls before the 1990 elections by dishing out millions of rupees to politicians.

In the previous hearing, the bench has asked the former spy master to submit the list he had promised containing names of ISI officials involved in the operation to verify the distribution of funds among different people.

Asad Durrani submitted his written statement to the court pertaining to distribution of money among the politicians to influence general elections against Benazir Bhutto. He claimed that the he had received money from Army Chief Mirza Aslam Baig in this regard.

He added, “The names of politicians were obtained from the Presidency through Ijlal Haider Zaidi, a member of then president Ghulam Ishaq Khan’s election team, while the donations were doled out to the politicians at the directions of then Army Chief Mirza Aslam Baig”.

The spy master further revealed that the money was distributed on the behest of former president Ghulam Ishaq Khan as he had appointed Jalal Haider Zaidi for this purpose.

He added that some Rs 70 million out of the Rs 140 million were doled out through him while the remaining amount was submitted to the ISI’s secret funds.

The court was further told by the former ISI chief that all the officers who had been involved in the process of distributing money belonged to Military Intelligence (MI). The Supreme Court adjourned the hearing of the case till July 30.
