Expressing concerns over the remarks made by the Supreme Court judges about the parliament, the rulings party defended the opposition against perceived criticism.

Senator Farhatullah Babar, who is also spokesperson to the presidency, said that the judges of the apex court should also know limits. In his view, the ruling of the National Assembly speaker had been overturned and dignity of the parliament was continuously being hurt by the court.

In a rare occurrence, the Friday’s session of the Upper House observed member of the ruling lot expressing their reservations and annoyance with judges of the apex court for criticizing the opposition’s role in parliamentary affairs.

A couple of days ago, Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry while hearing petitions against recently passed Contempt of Court Act 2012 had questioned the wisdom of opposition that staged a walkout instead of opposing the bill in parliament.

Urging the judiciary to exercise restraint in dealing with parliament Senator Farhatullah Babar said, “I was concerned with the reported remarks of a Supreme Court judge during a hearing, where he claimed that a section of parliament failed to perform its duty. Such comments only undermine the prestige of parliament which is not a good omen”.

He was of the opinion that parliament had demoed great honor for the judiciary by refraining from passing comments on judicial matter. The parliament, in return, wanted judged to practices similarly in discussing functions of the legislators.

The presidential spokesperson was of the opinion that the record was showing that parliament had been exhibiting great maturity in its workings.

He added, “This maturity was demonstrated by parliament in promptly accepting the judiciary’s views in the matter of judges’ appointments at the time of the 18th Amendment and also in promptly handing over a record of parliamentary proceedings when asked”.

Farhatullah Babar said the Supreme Court registrar had been avoiding appearance despite he was summoned by Public Accounts Committee (PAC) for audit clarification.

He urged the superior judiciary to uphold the parliament in the same manner as the parliament upholds the judiciary.
