Beats Electronics under International Olympics Committee’s radar on unpaid marketing of headphones

The 2012 London Olympics organizing committee is blowing hot air at Beats Electronics, a US-based consumer products company that specializes in headphones. The International Olympics Committee is looking into the guerrilla marketing stunt undertaken by the company to promote its headphones through athletes participating in the Olympics.

According to various reports, Beats headphones’ omnipresence in big cities in the US has now penetrated into Europe as well. It is not the first time, England has its fair share of the headsets but unpaid endorsement by athletes in the Olympics is just another matter altogether.

IOC is of the opinion that Beats Electronics has deliberately provided the athletes their products to show off at the games. This is a serious matter for the organizing committee and they plan to ask of the company to pay for official sponsorship. This is of significance importance because if they didn’t no one will ever bother to pay for any type of sponsorship.

On the other hand Beats’ representatives were of few words on the matter and declined to comment on the matter.

The controversial scene started when some of the Great Britain athletes posted on their Twitter accounts that they have received customized headphones with the Union Jack printed. Some have even gone to the length of mentioning the guerrilla marketing strategy by the company.

This is not the first time that Beats has taken up such an audacious stunt. In 2008 Beijing Olympics Dr. Dre, one of the founders of the company and renowned musician and actor, gave one Beats headphones set to LeBron James and other members of US Men’s Basketball team.

It seems Chinese did not take this as offensive as the English have. The IOC is in sessions to properly take actions against the company on the unpaid sponsorship. More results on the issue are expected to arrive in the coming days.
