Australia’s Tyler Wright and America’s Courtney Conlogue put on impressive performances to clinch victory in their respective Round 2 heats at the Nike US Open of Surfing, the seventh and final stop on the 2012 Women’s Association of Surfing Professionals World Championship Tour, which went down at the Huntington Beach in California, America, on Wednesday, August 1.

Wright got the better of Hawaii’s Dax McGill in the third heat to successful advance through into the third round, while removing her rival from the contention for the event title in the process.

The fourth heat saw Brazil’s Jacqueline Silva struggle to come up with an adequate response to an impressive performance by Conlogue, which led to her elimination from the event while allowing her rival to comfortable make her way through into the next round.

The surfing conditions prevailing at the main event site offered plenty of potent scoring opportunities for the elite female surfers to show off their surfing prowess, though getting hold of those opportunities required an effort. There was plenty at stake during the second round, with the sword of elimination over the surfers’ heads, which raised expectations for a series of intense and enthralling battles for survival.

The third heat saw Wright, 2011 ASP Women’s Rookie of the Year and current World No.3, take on McGill in a one-on-man battle for the Round 3 spot. After failing to make much of an impact during their Round 1 heats, both the surfers had plenty of reason to push hard during their latest battle.

As the heat got underway, Wright wasted very little time to stamp her authority in the heat. Getting hold of a couple of good scores, she reached a heat-total of 13.00 points.

McGill failed to offer a solid response to her rival and only managed to get to a heat-total of 7.66 points, which forced her to surrender victory as well as the Round 3 spot to her rival.

The fourth heat saw Conlogue, current ASP Women’s World No.5, take a comfortable win over Silva, whose lack of form at such a crucial time proved costly for her.

The American surfer went through a series of average scores before posting a 7.33 on the score-board. Keeping the momentum going, she added an additional 7.60 points to her account, thus reaching a two-wave total of 14.93 points.

Silva’s reply to her rival’s solid performance was nothing to write home about. Scoring a 4.67 off her first business-wave and backing it up with a 3.17-point ride, she finished with a heat-total of 7.84 points, which led to her second successive loss and thus elimination from the competition.
