PPP decides to fight against the Supreme Court

In quite an expected move, Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) has decided to strongly resist all the new centres of power confronting the parliament.

This fight, however, will be within the legal and constitutional limits.

A meeting held at the presidency with President Asif Ali Zardari in the chair in which Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf was also present.

Senator Farhatullah Babar, who is also spokesperson to the presidency, said that the meeting discussed current situation in the country with focus on preparation for elections, overcoming energy crisis and the legal challenges before the government.

He noted, “The President during the meeting called upon the party leadership to gear up preparations for the future elections which the President emphasized would be held on time in accordance with the constitutional and legal dictates and in consultation with coalition partners”.

He further said that the president directed the party leadership to ensure every MNA, MPA an ticket holder thoroughly check voter lists so that no one was left to and report and discrepancy to Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) for refinement.

“President Zardari said his party believes in power of the people and is never shy of going to masses for endorsement of its policies. It believes in free‚ fair, transparent elections for which it is important that electoral rolls should be free of errors and no eligible voter is left out of list”, the spokesperson added.

The president was also quoted as saying he asked party leaders to reach out to masses and address their problems.

President Zardari was of the opinion that holding of next general elections in time at the end of the tenure by the present assemblies would be another important milestone in the nation’s journey towards strengthening of the democracy and further strengthening of the political process.

The spokesperson continued that Minister for Water and Power Ch. Ahmed Mukhtar briefed the meeting about the energy situation in the country and what measures they were taking to overcome the crisis.

Later, Law Minister Farooq H. Naek briefed on legal challenges and strategy adopted to confront them. The meeting expressed satisfaction with strategy and determination to resist within bounds of law and Constitution.

It said law making is sacred responsibility of legislature which will not be abandoned at any cost, reposing full confidence in President Zardari and Prime Minister Ashraf’s leadership.
