Discos involved in electricity price hikes; PAC told

Islamabad: (Thursday, August 09, 2012) Zaffar Mehmood, the secretary Water and Power accepted before the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) here today that power distribution companies (Discos) have been involved in inflating the
electricity bills.

Mehmood said this while briefing the PAC meeting here today held under the Chair of Nadeem Afzal Chan.

Knowing the facts, the meeting sought a reply on disbanding Discos and restoring the old system of WAPDA House. The PAC also decided to deliberate on the audit of ministry of water and power.

The Secretary WAPDA told the meeting that the annual loss in the energy sector is Rs. 104 billion and that the ministry has no access to the record of Discos budget.

He further said that the government cannot afford to provide complete subsidy of Rs 280 due to the ongoing financial crisis. However, he said that the industrial sector is being provided uninterrupted power supply as they pay.
