Yousaf Raza Gilani comes out to safeguard Raja Pervez Ashraf

In what appeared to be a surprising move, former premier Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani has come out to protect Raja Pervez Ashraf. In his view, the country would risk division if his successor was also removed from his post.

Reiterating his party policy about Swiss letter, Gilani contended that writing the letter to Swiss authorities was violation of the Constitution.

He observed, “If the incumbent premier is also sent packing by the court, we will not accept such an unconstitutional decision. I warn the judiciary to rectify its fault and review its judgment on the NRO implementation case”.

Gilani wanted the judiciary of public demonstrations in case the court disqualifies Raja Pervez Ashraf. He clearly indicated that they would resist and will take the matter to the people of the country.

He noted, “I have sacrificed my job to strengthen the Constitution and save democracy. This time around, if the judiciary sacks Pervez Ashraf, the country will risk dismemberment”.

When he was asked whether PM Ashraf should appear before the Supreme Court or not, he stated that it is only Asharf’s prerogative to appear or not, even though it is useless.

Raja Pervaiz Ashraf, who took over after Gilani was disqualified by the apex court for contempt of court, faces a similar fate for his refusal to write to the Swiss authorities to reopen a dormant graft case against President Asif Ali Zardari.

He said the judiciary didn’t reciprocate his move when he had appeared before the court out of respect.

“The present judiciary has jeopardized the holding of free and fair elections. Next elections will be held as per schedule – but they are linked with the stability of the incumbent PPP government. It’s a matter of three or four months, so the judiciary should have patience”, he added.

Commenting about opposition parties, the former premier said that the track record of Nawaz Sharif shows that he always came to power with the support of hidden hands. In his view, the PML-N in the present scenario wanted to delay the elections.

He explained, “Sharif’s recent statement that his party would resist postponement of the election was in fact a message for the PPP that the PML-N wanted the vote to be delayed”.
