Smartphones and wannabees not to buy despite low price – Part 2

Sony Xperia Ion (July 2012)

Announced at the Mobile World Congress and Consumer Electronic Show this year, before Sony and Ericsson parted ways, the phone attracted a lot of media attention for two main reasons, a camera with megapixels in double figures and a price that is under $100.

However, with the time, in six months the market saw a number of smartphones that were both faster than the Ion and had better cameras that could produce better pictures and videos. There actually was nothing bad about the Ion but there were other alternatives that had captured the market before the phone even hit the shelves.

ZTE Score M (March 2012)

The Chinese company has been making handsets that are neither bad nor mainstream, rather, as it goes with Chinese brands, alternatives to some mainstream handsets. The Chinese company had a great opportunity in the market to produce an Ice Cream Sandwich like its compatriot Huawei produced, the Ascend P.

However, ZTE was one of the biggest flops when it was introduced in the market. Especially in the US, it could not see the outside of the stores in some places, mostly because of the hardware and network problems. The official carrier Metro PCS has been known for slow networks and high-price data packages. The slow processor left little choice for users to buy the Android Gingerbread phone when there were ICS phones luring for even cheap buck.

Samsung Brightside (March 2012)

Samsung has produced and number of successful handsets in the last half a decade but there are always some phones from the Korean company that have stunned the public … not in a good manner. The March-release, Brightside, was one prominent example of the underlying premise.

The non-Android, non-Windows Phone smartphone wannabee had a price tag that could lure a lot of people but the lack of a powerful processor and the presence of an over-exposed, vivid and limited operating system never was attractive enough.

The likes of Brightside and Xperia Ion are some of the examples that suggest that smartphones are supposed to fulfill some of the pre-requisites to become one. Three most important are wireless network, fast processor and a proper up-to-date operating system. Otherwise the market is waterlogged with cheap and faster handsets that will not spare mercy to these handsets.
