Who set agendas for media in Pakistan

Pakistani media usually clamours about being vocal for common people’s rights, being just and only representing the true facts without an amalgamation of biased analysis. This claim should have been held true had the people not developed their own sense
of judgment. But now, thanks to the 24/7 analytical bombardment on these very TV channels, even the lay men are political aware and can easily distinguish facts from rhetoric.

With this political awareness, the masses have started to understand as to why some of the most important issues of common concern are not even touched upon by the popular media, however, sometimes even the petty issues are harped upon with full vigour.

Faced with this situation, the masses usually wonder as to who sets the agendas of the media and direct them to choose a certain topic and leave the other equally important or sometimes even more important one untouched upon.

Some of the insiders claim that the political, social, ethnic, religious and national affiliations of those sitting at the helm of the affairs are to be blamed for this phenomenon, while the others believe that corrupt practices have also got a lot to do
with the issue. In print media, these are the editors while in the electronic media, these are the programme anchors that usually promote certain agendas, with only few of them being exceptions and doing their programmes on the issues pertinent to the common
people’s concerns.

Now, no matter what is the real reason behind such phenomena, but this practice should be put to an end and that too through proper and formal legislation. The media should be made bound of not attempting to misguide the masses and if any such attempt is
made upon its part, its that specific outlet should be banned for good. While the task seems quite difficult, the real stakeholders including civil society, students, and the educated sections of the society can certainly play their role to fix this unwanted
happening.
