America’s Evan Thompson, Brazil’s Alex Ribeiro and South Africa’s Shaun Joubert qualified for the third round (Round of 48) at the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) 6-Star Coastal Edge ECSC presented by Vans after claiming victory in their respective Round 2 (Round of 96) heats that went down at Virginia Beach in Virginia, America, on Friday, August 24.

Brazil’s Tomas Hermes, America’s Ian Crane and his fellow countryperson Eric Geiselman were able to extend their life in the contention for the event title after securing runner-up place in their respective Round 2 heats.

The surfing talent from around the globe found themselves pitted against each other in two-to-three foot waves on the latest day of the competition. The day promised to deliver a heavy dose of thrilling action as the surfers competed for survival in four-man battles.

The 16th heat saw Thompson square-off with Hermes, Hawaii’s Hank Gaskell and Mexico’s Dylan Southworth. The American surfer got off to an energetic start and did not waste much time before posting a 5.83 on the score-board. In the dying minutes of the heat, he added an additional 7.70 points to his account, thus finishing with a heat-total of 13.53 points.

Hermes accompanied his American rival into the next round of the competition after registering a heat-total of 11.70 points, whereas both Gaskell and Ribeiro got eliminated from the competition after finishing with a heat-total of 9.17 and 7.26 points respectively.

The next heat featured a low-scoring contest with all four surfers struggling to get their hands on a couple of big scores.

Ribeiro eventually managed to clinch top honours after collecting a couple of scores in the four-point range to finish with a heat-total of 9.66 points. He was accompanied into the next round by the runner-up finisher Crane, courtesy of a two-wave total of 8.50 points.

Argentina’s Leandro Usuna and America’s JD Lewis found the competition come to a premature end after registering a heat-total of 8.50 and 7.76 points respectively.

Joubert walked away with the win in the 18th heat of Round 2 after finishing above Geiselman, Australia’s Cooper Chapman and Venezuela’s Francisco Bellorin.

The South African surfer went through a series of average scores before eventually posting a 6.17 off his first business-wave and immediately followed it up with an impressive 7.23-point ride to finish with a heat-total of 13.40 points.

Geiselman successfully extended his life in the competition as well after finishing with a heat-total of 12.47 points, while both Chapman and Bellorin were unable to make the Round 3 cut after finishing with a heat-total of 10.90 and 10.03 points respectively.
