Apple-Samsung case will not affect Android sales, says Gene Munster – Part 1

The recent Apple-Samsung case is making tons of press these days. The decision taken on Friday by the federal jury is taken differently by different analysts. Some say Apple is a clear winner in the case, while others are of the opinion that the design patent infringement, trade dress, went overboard in cornering Samsung.

Apple won over a billion dollar in damages from the Korean competitors but has also attracted a lot of criticism in return. On the edge of the world, Samsung partially won a similar case in South Korea, its home country. iPhone, iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS have been banned in the country on the basis of wireless technology infringement that Samsung owned.

From a broader angle, the attack was not only on Samsung but all the Android-based devices that are globally sold. Many experts are of the opinion that Android might come under the spotlight on some of these counts.

However, renowned Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster has something different to say. According to the expert, Android will have limited impact from the case ruling. In the global market, the impact is likely to be even minimal.

“In terms of what this means to the on going battle between Apple and Samsung (and by extension of Android, Google), we do not expect significant changes in the market,” he noted. “We expect Samsung to continue to offer competitive phones to the iPhone in the U.S. and other markets. We believe what will truly decide the winners in the smartphone market will be individual hardware and software offerings that excite consumers and we expect both Apple and Samsung to continue to deliver those experiences regardless of this particular court decision.”
