Raja Pervez Ashraf likely to face same fate as Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani: Aitzaz Ahsan

Pakistan Peoples’ Party (PPP) Senator Aitzaz Ahsan has said that Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf might face the same fate as his predecessor Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani.

The Supreme Court on Monday has given time to Prime Minister Ashraf till September 17 to show commitment and write letter to Swiss authorities against his boss President Asif Ali Zardari.

It is vital to mention here that Aitzaz was Gilani’s counsel in the contempt of court case in which he was convicted and disqualified on June 19 after failing to implement the NRO verdict the court had delivered in December 2009.

While speaking to the media, the PPP stalwart and former president of the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) said that the 10 judges who disqualified Gilani would definitely uphold their previous verdict at every cost.

Earlier, the apex court had issued a show-cause notice under Article 204 of the Constitution to PM Ashraf over his failure to implement court orders of writing a letter to Swiss authorities to reopen graft cases against President Zardari. He was directed to appear personally before the court on August 27.

Senator Aitzaz observed, “There is not a single precedent in the world’s history in which a sitting president was tried by a court of law during the last 500 years”.

Brushing aside the notion that he was completely opposed to the Swiss letter, he said that the timing was not appropriate under the law.

He reiterated his stance that as long as Asif Ali Zardari was president, he enjoyed immunity.

Replying to another query, he said that the apex court should summon Senator Faisal Raza Abidi on contempt of court charges and probe the whole matter.

He was of the opinion that the Supreme Court had exceeded its powers and sentenced Gilani in a case which was not in indictment.

He said that the core committee of the ruling party had decided not to appeal against the verdict for disqualifying the Prime Minister. Answering a question, Aitzaz said he was not going to appear in the court for the Prime Minister.
