Facebook’s growth has slowed in the rankings of top social networking websites that are mostly US-based. But FB still is the top dog in the rankings with almost 10 percent share of monthly and weekly visits.

Smaller social media networks like Pinterest and Instagram showed the most growth in visits. The latter witnessed a 17,319% growth in annual visits and subscriptions over the last one fiscal year. Lying right next to the photo sharing social network is Pinterest with a growth recorded at 5,124%. Instagram was number 1 in terms of growth followed by Pinterest in a total of more than 6,000 social media websites all over the world.

Facebook on the other hand had an almost stagnant growth rate but its market share in terms of visits and subscriptions is 10 percent, the best in the hoard. On the other hand, Twitter, 2nd in such ranking recorded a mere 0.32 percent share.

Smaller networks like Pinterest have seen an increased traffic to their websites. The aforementioned, for instance, had 56,000 weekly visits a year earlier that has grown to 12.1 Million in 2012.

As Facebook went public this Summer, investors are pessimistic about its growth and latest rankings coupled with its sloppy performance in stock market. However, many experts are of the opinion that Facebook is here to stay and temporary jolts will not harm the market leader. The Social Network is adapting fast and is expanding its services portfolio with time.

“Facebook has done a good job, actually, of watching what these other companies are doing and kind of adapting their products,” said Jenny Sussin, an analyst at market tracker Gartner. “That’s why it’s been so successful, even if it isn’t as financially successful right now.”

Facebook should not be compared to public limited companies like Zynga and Groupon. For one they all depend on FB and it is nevertheless a market leader.

Sussin said that despite the exponential growth, users switch back and forth between the likes of Instagram and Pinterest, and Facebook. Usually, they get back to biggest social network because of the wide array of services it offers.
