Glenn Hall and Joan Duru make the Round 4 cut at San Miguel Pro Zarautz

Ireland’s Glenn Hall and France’s Joan Duru advanced to Round 4 (Round of 24) at the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) 6-Star San Miguel Pro Zarautz after walking away with victory in their respective Round 3 (Round of 48) heats that went down at the primary event site of Zarautz in Basque Country, Spain, on Friday, August 31.

Brazil’s Jano Belo made his way into the next round as well after finishing behind Hall in runner-up place during the third round. Brazil’s Ricardo Ferreira and his fellow countryperson Alexandre Chacon finished in third and fourth place respectively, consequently getting eliminated from the competition.

The second heat saw Morocco’s Ramzi Boukhiam finish behind Duru in second place to advance to the next round of the competition. Brazil’s Caio Ibelli finished in third place, while Australia’s Thomas Woods had to settle for bottom position. Both the surfers were forced to make a premature exit from the competition as a result.

The opening heat of the latest day saw Hall pitted against Belo, Ferreira and Chacon in three-to-four foot waves with strong on-shore winds accompanying them.

As the battle got underway, the Irish surfer got off to an impressive start, earning a 6.83 off his first business-wave and immediately backed it up with an outstanding 8.33-point ride, thus moving to a heat-total of 15.16 points.

Belo collected a couple of scores in the five-point range to finish with a heat-total of 11.50 points, which served to take him through into the next round as well.

Ferreira and Chacon finished with a heat-total of 11.44 and 9.57 points respectively, consequently getting eliminated from the competition.

Duru put on a superb performance in the second heat to completely steal the show. The Frenchman made the demanding conditions look extremely easy, collected a massive 9.70 and 9.03 off his best-two waves to finish with a winning heat-total of 18.73 points.

Boukhiam successfully extended his life in the event as well after finishing with a heat-total of 14.00 points, which included a 6.17 and 7.83-point ride.

Ibelli finished in third place with a heat-total of 11.76 points, while Woods have to settle for bottom-place after registering a heat-total of 9.26 points.
