New Kindle Fire HD: What is new in Amazon’s flagship tablets? – Part 1

After the torrents of rumours the new Kindle Fire tablets are officially out. Though there were no smartphones at the Thursday event, held by Amazon in Santa Monica, as many had rumoured, the new Kindle Fire HD took centre stage.

The new Kindles are way much better than the previous version. But with the overall package including the ecosystem benefits the new devices are now in neck-and-neck competition with Apple’s iPad.

The upbeat presentation at the event showed off three new versions of the company’s flagship tablet. The one on the lower end is still the 7-inch Kindle Fire but now with a new and cheaper price, $159. Then comes the new Kindle Fire HD with the same screen size taking the $199 price tag.

Next in line is the 8.9-inch Kindle Fire HD with WiFi connectivity starting at $299 and the higher end belongs to the Kindle Fire HD with as much screen size and 4G LTE capabilities, priced at $499 for 16 GB version.

The new Fires have been upgraded with new processors, denser screens and faster connectivity.

The 7-inch Kindle Fire HD has a screen resolution of 1280×800 pixels. The most pertinent criticism on the 2011 version was the pixelated screen with low resolution. The new, denser display surely wards off the opprobrium.

In addition to the screen resolution, the new Fire HD also has a faster processor, Texas Instruments OMAP 4460. The company claims that it is way faster than the 2011 model and supports a number of performance-hungry apps.

The WiFi connectivity has been improved in the new device as well. Supported by two WiFi antennae instead of one in the original version, the Fire HD now downloads apps 40 percent faster than the iPad, according to the company.
