Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf has only two options; letter or disqualification: Aitzaz Ahsan

Pakistan Peoples’ Party Senator Aitzaz Ahsan on Saturday said that Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf has no other option than to write to Swiss authorities or get disqualified, rejecting any middle way between government and judiciary.

While speaking to a private TV channel, the renowned jurist rejected the impression that he advised his party not to follow court’s rulings.

It is vital to mention here that Aitzaz Ahsan had been served as lawyer to Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry during the lawyers’ movement.

He was of the opinion that Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani’s acceptance of sentence was clear sign of complying with court order even though the punishment was not correct.

He observed, “The current prime minister will also be disqualified if he doesn’t write to Swiss authorities for the re-opening of cases against President Zardari”.

He, however, said that Pakistan Peoples’ Party (PPP) will not write to Swiss authorities, adding that no case could be opened in Swiss courts till Zardari holds office of the president.

Commenting on the political engagements of president Zardari in presidency, the legal experts questioned if such meetings weren’t held in White House.

If Obama wasn’t holding meetings with political parties in White House, he asked.

Answering a question, Aitzaz said President Asif Ali Zardari enjoyed immunity not as a person but as an incumbent president, and the court was bound to respect this immunity.

Earlier, in an interview, he said that the parliament could make amendments in the Constitution, adding that these could not be challenged in any court of law.

He rejected the impression of military takeover saying some judgments passed by the apex court recently eliminated any possibility of the country returning to martial law.

While replying to a query, he said that he had no regrets about his active role in restoration movement and that it was a movement for the victory of the people.
