Nuclear technology passed on the directives of Benazir Bhutto: Dr Abdul Qadeer Khan

Renowned nuclear scientist Dr. Abdul Qadeer Khan has claimed that he passed the nuclear technology to other countries on the directives of former premier Shaheed Benazir Bhutto.

According to a report published in ‘The News’, he said that the former premier had given him straight directions to help the two countries.

The report stated, “AQ Khan said that then prime minister Benazir Bhutto had called him, gave the name of the two countries to be helped and she had given him a clear directive in this regard”.

Quoting Dr. Abdul Qadeer Khan, it added that Nawaz Sharif was not in favor of nuclear test blasts, back in 1999.

He stated, “The nuclear technology transfer process was not such that someone could give it to other country by just hiding it in the pocket, as it was guarded by eight hundred persons”.

The father of the nuclear technology made it clear that he was not self-governing instead he was bound to abide by the orders of the premier of the country and that explains he had to do it.

Dr AQ Khan said the nuclear programme of the country was currently 100 percent safe, but if any dictator assumed power tomorrow, nothing could be said about the safety of the nuclear programme.

Dr Khan said today some people were making efforts and even telling lies to claim credit for achieving nuclear capability but they were not being asked whether any country or personality had credited them with the development of the atomic bomb or accepted their status in this regard.

Replying to a question about his state TV confession of the crime during General Pervez Musharraf era, Dr Abdul Qadeer Khan said that the nuclear program could be saved by doing so.

The report quoting him further said that Chaudhry Shujaat, the leader of the Pakistan Muslim League-Q was used by Pervez Musharraf for getting a confession from the nuclear scientist.

When he was asked about his support to the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and Imran Khan, he said that he had great expectations from Khan, but he was disappointed after few meetings with cricketer-turned-politician.

He noted, “Imran Khan’s political thinking is still immature and those having expectations from him will soon be disappointed”.

It is vital to mention here that Dr. Abdul Qadeer Khan launched his own party namely Tehreek-e-Tahaffuz Pakistan (TTP).

Spokesperson PPP Senator Farhatullah Babar has strongly rebutted Dr A.Q Khan’s assertion that he transferred nuclear materials and technology to two countries on the orders of former Prime Minister Shaheed Mohtamra Benazir Bhutto.

The assertion of A Q Khan is a belated and desperate attempt to wash the guilt of proliferating nuclear weapons by associating the name of Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto to lend a semblance of respectability to a crime that brought huge embarrassment and inflicted incalculable damage on Pakistan, Senator Farhatullah Babar said in a statement.

Farhatullah Babar said that public memory was not so short as to forget the public apology tendered by A.Q Khan on national television in February 2004 in which acknowledging nuclear proliferation and also admitted his guilt thus, “I have much to answer for it”.

Expressing “the deepest sense of sorrow, anguish and regret” over what he had done Dr Khan had also admitted in his infamous TV appearance, “The investigation has established that many of the reported activities did occur and that these were inevitably initiated at my behest”.

Senator Farhatullah Babar said that the so called disclosure by Dr Khan at this point of time was futile attempt to wash his guilt by seeking to associate Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto in his crime.

It is disgusting that almost a decade later Dr Khan should be seeking to restore his image by seeking to lay the blame at the door of Shaheed Bibi when the latter is no longer alive, Senator Babar said.

But while one may pity the twists and turns of a guilt-laden conscious it should not be forgotten that the stern laws of nature seldom pause for pity.

Dr. Khan would do well to re-read his February 2004 public statement on national television and remember that the words and sentences he uttered on that fateful day can never be recalled.

Senator Farhatullah Babar said that Dr Khan now owed another public apology; this time to the soul of Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto and to her innumerable followers and admirers for hurling baseless and unfounded allegations against her.

Dr Abdul Qadeer Khan, in an interview to a local daily has held Benazir Bhutto responsible for transferring nuclear technology to two different countries, the name of which Dr Qadeer has declined to reveal. According to Dr Qadeer, since it was an order coming from the then prime minister, he had no other option but to comply. Dr Qadeer has had a tendency to divulge sensitive secrets in the past as well. Years back he told to the world about Pakistan’s success in making the bomb. In 2004, he accepted publicly his involvement in selling nuclear secrets to Libya, North Korea and Iran. Now he is pointing fingers at Benazir Bhutto, which stretches credibility. Pakistan’s nuclear programme has always been under the tight control of the military and no civilian government has ever been allowed even to sneak a look at it, leave alone to take any decision about it. The refusal of the army to let Benazir visit Kahuta is still fresh in memory. The PPP government has rebutted this statement, calling it Dr Qadeer’s desperate attempt to cleanse the stigma on him of nuclear proliferation.
