Supreme Court rejects secretaries’ response in Balochistan case

Expressing annoyance over the situation, the Supreme Court of Pakistan has rejected the joint response submitted by Interior Secretary, Defense Secretary and Chief Secretary Balochistan in the law and order situation and violation of human rights in the province.

The three top officials including Interior Secretary K. M. Siddiq Akbar, Defense Secretary Lt. Gen. (Retd) Asif Yasin Malik and Chief Secretary Balochistan Babar Yaqqob Fateh Muhammad filed a joint response to the court.

A three-judge bench of the apex court with Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry in the chair resumed the hearing of the petition filed by the Balochistan Bar Association on the deteriorating law and order situation in the region

Earlier, the hearing began with an exchange of harsh words between the chief justice and Attorney General Irfan Qadir.

Chief Justice Chaudhry had objected to the appearance of the attorney general in the courtroom, saying that why he had appeared before the court.

To this, the attorney general had said that he should not be called for these if the court thinks he should not appear for the hearings.

In the counter arguments, the chief justice said had asked the attorney general to read the court’s ruling, upon which, Qadir had said that the court’s orders reached him late.

At one point, the attorney general raised a question that why the Balochistan law and order case was being prolonged. In reply to this, the chief justice said that the situation in the province was going from bad to worse.

The court terming the joint report on the law and order situation in Balochistan as formality said that they had just fulfilled the orders rather making any efforts to investigate facts.

Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry remarked that he the court had been knocking on every door to resolve the Balochistan issue, saying that it had no choice but to reveal the contradiction between the Constitution and the approach of the government.

Earlier on Wednesday, the interior secretary had arrived at the Supreme Court after the bench warned that action would be taken against him in case he failed to appear before it.

The court had stated that Akbar must appear before the court within 30 minutes, adding that the court would get him suspended if he failed to do so.
