Anurag Basu: I take a lot of pride in saying ‘Barfi’ is original

Indian director Anurag Basu is in the news since his latest film ‘Barfi’ has been released. Although the film received a great press and encouraging box-office response, many out there are not happy with it since they believe several clips in the film are copied.

The film, which was released on September 14, landed in the middle of the controversy when several bloggers in the country uploaded clips that clearly indicated that Basu’s movie is anything but original.

The critics claimed that the clips in Barfi have been plucked not only from Charlie Chaplin films but also from Hollywood Westerns and classics such as Buster Keaton’s ‘Cops’, ‘Singing in the Rain’, the Japanese film ‘Kikijiro’ and ‘The Notebook’.

However, the director of the film is still claiming that his film has not been copied and it is completely original.

“It’s very difficult to make original cinema and I take a lot of pride in saying Barfi! is original.

While speaking on his inclusion, Basu insisted that he has always appreciated others work and he doesn’t understand why people are going against his movie.

“It baffles me why people are not appreciating the original plot, screenplay, characters and situations. The other films that are contenders for the Oscars are really good films. I am very privileged to be in that group. I paid homage to the films and filmmakers that I grew up watching.”

Martin Scorcese and Quentin Tarantino have done the same. Does that make them thieves? Great moments of cinema that you’ve watched through the years, stay with you and come out in your work. It doesn’t mean you’re copying anyone. Thank God The Artiste was not made by an Indian. If it had been, it would have never been nominated for the Oscar, let alone winning the award.”
